Chapter 5

Avery went over his gear list. He didn’t know exactly what he’d be facing when he fought the knight so he prepared for everything. He would carry as much as he could, knowing that once he was in the arena he could cache stuff and pick it up later if necessary. He could go ahead and pack his gear. None of it would work unless he was in the arena anyway. Such precautions were installed in all weaponry besides the primitives, like blades and blunt force. It would have been a dream come true for the anti-gun crowd in the era when he lived on earth.

His door chirped letting him know someone was requesting entry. He pressed the unlock button and Cody rushed through the door.

“I heard you took my match tomorrow after they upgraded it.” His voice was laced with aggravation and concern.

"Yes, there wasn't much option if I wanted to keep you alive," Avery responded, never looking up from his pack.

"That doesn't make any sense. From everything I've heard it's a death sentence. You've spent all this time surviving and now you choose to throw it all away for a random new guy? Someone you've known less than a few days. You took my choice away from me!"

"Choice? Do you think we have any choice here? Let me tell you something, boy, we've never had a choice here. Not since they conquered us. Not since they enslaved us. The only choice we have is how we die. Want to know why I'm doing this? Because you can leave here eventually. You can go back home. You can do something. You made a choice-a bad one-to come here. But you can choose to leave, I can't. “

Avery paused here catching his breath as he continued to organize his pack. It also allowed time for his words to sink in before he continued.

“So there's a chance that you can do what I never can. You can go home and find a way to beat these alien bastards. I've always been going to die here. They wouldn't let anything else happen. They'll kill us all, the "heroes" of Earth. Those who left to save our planet from destruction, the only ones to successfully kill them in their invasion. They have to make an example of us, so we'll die here. But we'll make sure to do it harder than they ever expected. And after we’re gone they won’t know it, but we’ll have won. We’ll have given earth what it needs to win in the end. And that’s the choice I am making today."

Cody had sat down. It was a while before he responded, “You all are still heroes there, you know that? Sure, no one talks about it as much. The holo-feeds don't say it. But everyone knows the stories. The men that wouldn’t die easy, that wouldn’t bend. That fought for us. That died for us. I remember the stories my parents told me, and the stories their parents told them.
